Marketing Best Practices - How and When to Use the Y-Box

Posted by Jeff Davis on Thu, Apr 09, 2015 @ 04:55 PM

Or When Is the Best Time for The Ask...

The Y-Box is sexy.  It allows you to initiate a pop-up ad while a visitor is on your website. Imagine being able to ask a potential client for their email while they are there!  Got it!  Now let's schedule them for an email drip campaign.  First to go out is an immediate email - "Thank you for surrendering your contact information."  Then in five days another automated email - "We miss you! Haven't seen you for a awhile...  Join now!"  Drip, drip, drip... Out they go...

All happening automatically while you are sipping a Mint Julip out by the pool!

But web visitors are still people.  And you must use this tool properly in order to be effective.  All to often I visit a new website - one I have never been to before - and BAM! a box pops up and asks for my email address, or Like Us on Facebook!  I haven't even figured out if I like the website, the products, the services and already they are asking permission to market to me.  The answer is simple.

No.

And then I leave the site.  No chance to convert me to a customer.

So here are few rules you should follow.

  • Never ask for permission to market to this customer until they have a chance to look around. Set the page load option to three or four pages before the "ask" pops up.
  • Set a cookie so you don't ask for the clients contact information again for the next 30 days.
  • Set a cookie so once they do give you thier email address, you never ask them again.
Respect your audience and you will have a much better chance at making a favorable impression and have a chance at converting them into a cherished customer.
