Why Words Matter

Posted by Jeff Davis on Fri, Jul 29, 2016 @ 08:00 AM

Google Trends is one of the most under utilized tools available online.

So why don't you use it? It can't be the price because it is free. My guess is that you either have not heard of it, or it slipped off the radar screen.

When most people think of Google, they think of Search. But Google has done an amazing job of watching our online behavior and developing tools to help us unlock the behavior of consumers online.

Here are links to a couple of articles about some of the tools available from Google that you may not be familiar with:

But let's get back to Google Trends. Google Trends is a great tool to show you exactly how people conduct search on Google.com and when they search. Take the term "Pokemon".

Few people cared about this term until July 6th, 2016 when Pokemon Go was launched. And suddenly the "search" was on.

Words matter. We use Google Trends all the time at Thrive, especially when we are writing content for online postings. We strive to write content that matches the language people use.

Google Trends not only allows you to review words, it allows you to adjust for regional variances. Look at the regional interest of a term found frequently on a YMCA website - "Gym".

This term is used most often in Hawaii, New Jersey and District of Columbia. In Oregon and Kansas it is rarely used at all. You can also drill down to a more local level - Metro Area or City - to further refine your research.

But you shouldn't stop here. What other terms come to mind when individuals search for "gym"? How about "fitness".

So now we learn that people search for the term "fitness" more than "gym". So when you are creating content on your site, try using the term "fitness" or better yet, use both terms.

Here are the search results for "the anatomical juxaposition of the two orbis curis muscles in the state of contraction".

And if we change the search term to the more frquently used term "kiss"...

What do you know, words matter!

All is not lost. Oregon leads the country with searches on the term "kiss".
