How to Successfully Use Promoted Posts on Facebook

Posted by Brittany Norton on Tue, May 14, 2013 @ 10:59 AM

With all Facebook's changes to the timeline, people's profiles, cover photos, ads and pages - there is so much to learn once those changes take effect. Facebook pages have the ability to reach hundreds or thousands of people, depending on how well you promote the page and publish content that people will want to know. There are several ways to create a promoted post - either from the Facebook page itself or from the ads dashboard.

When creating ads on Facebook there are three options available:

- Promoted posts

- More likes

- Create an ad

Let's focus on promoting posts:

There are also two ways of creating promoted posts. You can promote a post that has been made previously on the Facebook page. When clicking on the promoted post option, there is a drop down menu to choose which previous post you would like to promote. When promoting a post - do not choose a post from more than a week ago unless it is relevant to a current event or promotion.

The point of promoted posts is to prolong the viewing of that post and blast it across people's newsfeeds.

There are several check points once a post has been chosen:

If you want to promote a post straight from the Facebook page, there is a button on the bottom right hand corner of the post, "boost post". Once you click on that button, a drop down will appear with pricing and how many people that budget will reach. Here is an example from a page with almost 11,000 likes:

If you are promoting a post from the Facebook page, it is a good idea to pick a post that has to do with an offer. Maybe an event or a promotion from that week. Even a campaign you are currently running that you would like to have more excitement built around.

When creating the promoted post from the Facebook ad dashboard, you can also make the post hit a certain demographic. You can target friends of specific pages which will broaden the group of people that will see the post.

Promoted posts can help with increasing likes, drawing people to your page and getting the word out on important information.
